Prices will vary a lot based on size, type and location but we have a general price outline here from Canadian sources.
On-the-Ground Cost
I thought I would start this out with a personal story. We recently had our garage door and garage door opener replaced. The installation was pretty straight forward and we purchased the garage door opener from Candian Tire and just gave it to the installer which saved us some money.
The whole project was ~1700 CAD and that was just for a single car garage door + installation of the opener.
We did go with a slightly more modern-looking door with some detail instead of the plain jane one.
Maintenance
Maintenance on the new door has been low but we do what we can to keep it in good shape especially after winter. Check out our maintenance blog for more info on what you can do.

The cost of a new garage door in Canada can vary widely depending on factors such as the material, style, size, insulation, and whether installation is included. Here’s a general breakdown of price ranges based on Canadian averages:
1. Material:
- Steel Garage Doors: The most common and cost-effective option. Prices range from $800 to $2,500 CAD, depending on whether it is insulated or not.
- Aluminum Garage Doors: Lightweight and resistant to rust, with prices typically ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 CAD.
- Wood Garage Doors: These are more expensive due to their aesthetic appeal and customization options, ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 CAD or more, depending on the type of wood and design.
- Fiberglass or Composite Doors: A durable, low-maintenance option, generally costing between $1,500 and $4,000 CAD.
2. Size:
- A standard single-car garage door (8×7 feet or 9×7 feet) usually costs between $800 to $2,000 CAD.
- A double-car garage door (16×7 feet) can range from $1,500 to $4,000 CAD.
3. Insulation:
- Non-Insulated Doors: These are on the lower end of the price range, typically costing around $800 to $1,500 CAD.
- Insulated Doors: These add cost but are beneficial in cold Canadian climates, with prices between $1,500 and $3,500 CAD for insulated options.
4. Installation Costs:
- Installation fees typically range from $300 to $800 CAD, depending on the complexity of the installation, location, and if there are any additional features like garage door openers or automation systems.
5. Additional Features:
- Garage Door Openers: Adding an automatic garage door opener generally costs between $300 to $600 CAD, including installation.
- Custom Designs: Custom or high-end designs (e.g., carriage-style or glass doors) can increase the overall cost, potentially going as high as $5,000 to $8,000 CAD for custom-made models.
- Remember that you can paint your garage door. The reason I say this is because you can get a cheaper white door and then paint it to get the look you want rather than paying for a more premium looking door.
Estimated Total Cost:
For a basic, single, non-insulated steel garage door with standard installation, you can expect to pay around $1,100 to $1,800 CAD. For higher-end models or larger, insulated double garage doors, the price may go up to $3,500 to $6,000 CAD or more.
